PFC Christopher Alexander Horns was born on November 10, 1990, in Sumter, South Carolina, the son of Larry and Tamara (Hills) Horns. Chris loved life, especially spending time with his family outdoors, snowboarding, 4-wheeling, motorcycle riding, hiking and climbing the Colorado Fourteeners. Christopher’s decision to make a commitment to the Army was in January when he started his own training prior to his enlistment on July 13, 2010. Enlisting as Infantry, Chris wanted to show his support to those that had lost their lives. This was his goal though he had many other options. He graduated from Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) on October 29, 2010, he then volunteered to go into the Ranger Regiment. After Basic Training, Christopher went to Airborne School, and the Ranger Assessment and selection Program (RASP). Upon graduation on March 25, 2011, he was assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment and went to the 2d Ranger BN at Joint Base Lewis-McCord, WA with several of his great friends that he trained with during his training at Ft. Benning, GA. Christopher took advantage of block leave in August and returned to Colorado to have a great time with family and the Colorado Mountains. Chris deployed in Support of Operation Enduring Freedom at the end of August and was killed on a combat mission on October 22, 2011, in Afghanistan. “On his first combat deployment PFC Christopher Horns demonstrated all the qualities we look for in our U.S. Army Rangers. Courageous and discipline, he lost his life while pressing the assault in an area known for insurgent activity,” said LTC Hodne. “He earned the universal respect of seniors and peers alike. We will honor his service and remember his sacrifice; all who knew and admired Christopher Horns will miss him, both as a Ranger and as a trusted friend.” PFC Christopher Horns’ awards include Bronze Star Medal (posthumous), Purple Heart (posthumous), Army Commendation Medal (posthumous), Army Good Conduct Medal (posthumous), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge (posthumous), and Parachutist Badge.
