Rev. Robert Hirsch, age 87, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Calmar, IA, died on March 21, 2009, at the Stone Hill Nursing Home in Dubuque, IA, after a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA, by Archbishop Jerome Hanus, O.S.B. Burial will be in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar, IA.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar from 3:00 – 8:00 With a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 7:00 there will also be visitation after 10:00 Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church or St. Aloysius Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 815 Calmar, Iowa 52132

Robert Matthew Jerome Hirsch was born on April 22, 1921, the son of Martin and Alma (Schmitt) Hirsch in Dubuque, Iowa. Robert attended grade school and two years of high school at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Dubuque. He also spent two years at the Columbia Academy and then Loras College in Dubuque. He attended seminary at the Theological College of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received the order of Deaconate in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He was ordained to the Priesthood on May 31, 1947, by the Most Rev. Henry P. Rohlman in St. Raphael’s Cathedral, Dubuque, Iowa. His first Mass was celebrated on June 1, 1947, in Sacred Heart Church, Dubuque, Iowa. Father served from 1947 - 1948 at Saint Aloysius Church, Calmar, as Assistant Pastor; 1948 - 1953 at Saint Francis Xavier Church, Dyersville, as Assistant Pastor at Xavier High School, and as an Instructor; 1953 - 1958 at Loras Academy, Dubuque, Assistant Principal and Instructor; 1958 - 1960 at Regis Central High School, Cedar Rapids, Principal; 1960 - 1970 at Don Bosco Central High School, Gilbertville, Principal and Executive-Coordinator, Saint Francis Church, Barclay, Administrator; 1970 - 1971, at Saint Mary Church, Ackley, and Saint Paul Church, Geneva, Administrator; 1971 - 1972 at Saint Francis Church, Balltown, Pastor and Leo High School, Holy Cross, Principal; 1973 - 1975 at Saint Anthony Church, Saint Anthony, and Saint Gabriel Church, Zearing, Administrator; 1975- 1982 Saint Mary Church, McGregor, and Saint Pius Church, Cherry Mound, Pastor; 1982 - 1983 at Saint Patrick Church, Cedar Rapids, Pastor; 1984 - 1997 at Saint Aloysius Church, Calmar, Pastor and Executive-Coordinator, CFS Catholic Elementary. Father Hirsch retired in 1997 and resided in Calmar until his health forced him to enter the Stone Hill Nursing Home in Dubuque, Iowa on June 6, 2006. After retirement he looked forward to visits from friends, reading, walking, music, playing chess and cards, prayer, short travels, cooking and bouts with the computer and internet.

Father Hirsch is survived by a sister-in-law: Marcella Hirsch of Dubuque, IA, and nieces and nephews.

Father Hirsch was preceded in death by his parents: Martin and Alma Hirsch. Four sisters: Eileen Anglin, Bernadine Fasse Marie VonAh and Leona Wiersing. Four bothers: Joseph, Irvin, Adolph and Vincent Hirsch.
