Charlotte Henning, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Friday, April 3, 2009, at her home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Tom Pietz, Rev. Bryan Robertson, and Rev. Allen Vik officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning.
Charlotte Martha (Koenig) Henning was born on November 25, 1919, the daughter of William and Emma (Schroeder) Koenig near Castalia, Iowa. Charlotte attended Oak Hill country school near Castalia and worked as a hired girl. Charlotte married Reuben Henning on October 26, 1939, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. They lived near Castalia and then to a farm near Ossian in 1947, where they farmed until 1970, when they moved into Decorah. Charlotte cleaned homes and the ASCS office for several years. She enjoyed her flowers and gardens. She especially enjoyed having her family stop in to visit every Saturday and Sunday morning for roundtable discussions. Charlotte loved her children and grandchildren and will be missed dearly by all of them. Charlotte was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.
Charlotte’s survivors include her children: Janice Gossman, Decorah, IA; Les (Cindy) Henning, Hutto, TX; Marilyn (Bob) Lysne, Marion, IA and Dean (Marsha) Henning, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Laine (Jodi) Henning, Decorah, IA; Lynn Henning, Decorah, IA; Travis (Yatska) Henning, Honolulu, HI; Brianne (Scott) Maijala, Hutto, TX; Jody Lysne, Marion, IA; Jim Lysne, Marion, IA, Angela Lysne, Ben Henning, Decorah, IA and Jackie (Kyle) Frank, Marion, IA. Ten great grandchildren: Jordan & Zachary Henning, Jaden & Jaxon Lysne, Lydia & Macy Frank, Xander & Zaylie Henning, and Victoria & Isabella Maijala, along with other stepgrandchildren and great grandchildren. One sister: Marian Shafer, Waukon, IA. One sister-in-law: Pat Koenig, Janesville, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents: William and Emma (Schroeder) Koenig. Her husband: Reuben Henning on Oct. 31, 1987. Two brothers: Merlin and Orville (Irene) Koenig. One son-in-law: Charles Gossman. One sister: Crystal (Judd) Longerbeam. One brother-in-law: Ray Shafer.
