Agnes Hageman, age 97, of Calmar, Iowa died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture at 5:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.

Agnes Cecilia (Kuennen) Hageman was born on May 21, 1912, the daughter of Joe and Catherine (Schmitt) Kuennen on the family farm near Festina, Iowa. Agnes attended St. Mary’s Catholic school in Festina and graduated from the eighth grade in 1926. She then attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, for a few months during the winter, with an interest in sewing. Agnes married Norbert Hageman on May 20, 1935, at our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa, by Rev. A. J. Rubly. Together they farmed near Calmar where they raised their five children. Agnes enjoyed her flower gardens and having a large garden, especially raising strawberries. Her hobbies included playing cards, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and making quilts for all twelve grandchildren. She especially enjoyed baking and cooking for family gatherings, and caring for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Agnes was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Calmar Senior Citizens. Agnes volunteered at the Winneshiek Medical Center for ten years. She lived in her home until she entered the nursing home three years ago.

Agnes’ survivors include her two daughters: Lou Pavlovec, Fort Atkinson, IA and Mary (Dave) Junko, Bella Vista, AR. Three sons: Linus (DiAnn) Hageman, Calmar, IA; Lester Hageman, Fort Atkinson, IA and Merle (Darlene) Hageman, Fort Atkinson, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Brian (Giselle) Pavlovec, Deb (fiancé, Louie) Pavlovec, Beth Wright, Cindy (Tom) Kacher, Donna (Jeff) Maki, Mark (Tina) Hageman, Steve Hageman, Karen Junko, Lori (Errol) Walker, Kristie (Ryan) Wiltgen, Michael (fiance, Rachel) Hageman and Andrew (fiance, Nicole) Hageman. Twelve great grandchildren: Marc & Luke Pavlovec, Jeremy & Joshua Wright, Hailey & Brendon Kacher, Carter Maki, Dylan, Megan & Brittany Hageman, Brayden Walker and Collin Wiltgen.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents: Joe and Catherine (Schmitt) Kuennen. Her husband: Norbert Hageman on December 25, 1992. One daughter-in-law: Lois Hageman on Dec. 26, 2001. Four sisters: Martha (John) Elsbernd, Loretta (Alois) Elsbernd, Marie (Al) Heying and Sister Cecilia Kuennen. One brother: Arnold Kuennen.
