Edith N. Grosser, age 94, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, December 14, 2011 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Monday, December 19 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Tuesday one hour before the service at the church.
Edith Norma (Anderson) Grosser was born December 18, 1916 at home in Paris Township, rural Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of George N. and Cora (Vaala) Anderson. She received her elementary education in the rural schools of Jacksonville Township, Chickasaw County, and graduated from New Hampton High School with the class of 1935. Edith taught country school at Jacksonville No. 3 School and in various country schools in Winneshiek County. Even into her 90’s, she took great pride in this vocation.
She was united in marriage to Walter Fred Grosser on July 14, 1940 at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico, Iowa. This union was blessed with two sons, Richard and Charles.
Edith and Walter, along with her brother and sister-in-law, Palmer O. & Audrey Anderson, operated The Barb Restaurant for nine years. In 1955 Walter and Palmer purchased the Schlitz/Drewrys Beer Distributorship, which they ran for the next 30 years. Edith was a homemaker and involved with all of her family’s activities. She really enjoyed music, dancing, playing the piano in her younger days, cooking, her family and friends, and was also a very good golfer. She especially enjoyed rocking her great-granddaughter Katrina in her chair, before Edith became a resident of Aase Haugen Home.
Edith was a longtime member of Oneota Golf & Country Club, the Elks Club, and First Lutheran Church where she was very active in circle and as a Sunday school teacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter on February 28, 2009; one son, Richard Grosser of Jefferson, IA on December 5, 1985; her parents; three brothers: Palmer O. and his wife, Audrey, Anderson of Decorah, Cletus Anderson and Calvin and and his wife, Betty, Anderson of Jerico, IA; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Grosser and his wife, Jean, of Santa Barbara, CA;
Edith is survived by her son, Charles (Teresa) Grosser of Decorah; her granddaughter, Jeanette (Chris) Cotant of Cresco; three great-grandchildren: Katrina, Kendall and Karissa Cotant of Cresco; her brother, David (Phyllis) Anderson of New Hampton, IA; one brother-in-law, James (Rose Marie) Grosser of Azusa, CA; one sister-in-law, Laurine Anderson of Mankato, MN; and by many nieces and nephews.
