Vincent “Vince” J. Gerlich, age 59, of Ossian, Iowa, died on Monday, November 10, 2008, the Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, Iowa, following a probable heart attack.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Robert Ament officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Vincent John Gerlich was born on March 23, 1949, the son of Paul C. and Cleo Mae (Hosper) Gerlich at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, Iowa. Vince attended St. Aloysius Catholic Schools and graduated from South Winneshiek Community Schools in 1967. Following graduation, Vince attended Area I, now known as NICC Community College. Vince was a member of first class to attend Area I, and graduated in Accounting. In 1972, Vince married Pat Hunter and they later divorced. Vince was a truck driver and drove for Nor Eg, Olson Explosives, Heartland Express, Wiltgen Construction, Caledonia Haulers, JMS Trucking and Bushman Trucking. He enjoyed his time on the road and he enjoyed being the designated chauffeur for those in need of a ride. He took a lot of pride in his vehicles and he and Marlene enjoyed many trips together to Branson and Florida. Vince and Marlene loved to dance, attend community activities and try out new restaurants. He also liked to do jig saw puzzles, crossword puzzles, play cards and to tell jokes and stories. Vince was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Vince is survived by his special friend of twenty-eight years: Marlene Nesvik, Ossian, IA. Four sisters: Sharon (Terry) Balk, Waucoma, IA; Linda (Tom) Schissel, Ossian, IA; Marilyn (Greg) Pavelka, Traer, IA and Joyce (Randy) Nesvik, Ossian, IA. One brother: Keith (Stephanie) Gerlich, Calmar, IA. Nieces and nephews: Tasha (Darren) Welsh, Atlantic, IA; Dane Gerlich, Ames, IA; Raymond Schissel; Christopher (Lisa) Schissel, Ossian, IA; Grant (friend, Shannon) Schissel, West Union, IA; Jennifer Schissel and Samantha Schissel, Hiawatha, IA; Kimberly Nesvik, Cedar Falls, IA and Christina Nesvik, Ossian, IA; Eric Balk and Sarah (Ryan) Ries, Cedar Falls, IA; Stephanie (Nathan) Clark, Ankeny, IA; and Matthew (friend, Laura) Pavelka, Cedar Rapids, IA. Great nieces and nephews: Adelynn and Aubrey Welsh, Adreana Balk, Wesley, Rachel and Zachary Clark, and Madeline Pavelka. Step-great nephews: Kaden Heckman. Uncle and Aunt: Dave and Marian Hosper, Calmar, IA. Three cousins: Rick (Teena) Hosper, Sam (Kerri) Hosper and Steve (Cheryl) Hosper.

Vince was preceded in death his parents: Paul and Cleo Mae Gerlich. His infant brother: Michael Gerlich in 1948. One great nephew: Michael Balk in 1983. His uncle: Fred “Boots” Gerlich.
