Ronald J. Gehling, age 48, of Lansing, IA, formerly of Calmar, IA died on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at the Thornton Manor in Lansing, IA, following complications from hydrocephalus.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar is in charge of arrangements.
Ronald Joseph Gehling was born on March 9, 1960, the son of Florian and LaVonne (Baumler) Gehling in Decorah, Iowa. At the age of eight, Ronald went to live in a care facility in Sioux City, Iowa and has resided at Thornton Manor Care Facility in Lansing since 1980. He was loved and cared for by his Thornton Manor "family" in Lansing for the past twenty-nine years. Ron was very special and will be missed dearly.
Ron’s survivors include his brother: Bob (Nancy) Gehling, Calmar, IA Four sisters: Deb (Bob) Timp, Decorah, IA; Sandy (Keith) Kuennen, Ossian, IA; Sue (Ken) Einck, Fort Atkinson, IA and Carol Gerleman, Calmar, IA. Sixteen nieces and nephews: Brandi (T.J.) Schissel, Mike (Allanda) Gehling, Steve Gehling; Eric, Scott and Andrea Timp; Brooke Kuennen, Heather (Matt) Bullerman, Marcus and Jason Kuennen; Justin, Carrie and Megan Einck; Brian, Ashley and Taylor Gerleman. One great niece: Gracie Thompson and one great nephew: Isaac Bullerman. Five aunts: Elaine Brynsaas, Decorah, IA; Donna Koperski, Rochester, MN; Diane (Paul) Schmelzer, Ridgeway, IA; Sharon (Ron) Wiltgen, Gaylord, MN; and Florence Gehling, Decorah, IA. Five uncles: Floyd (Joyce) Baumler, Rochester, MN; Larry Baumler, Burr Oak, IA; and Art (Karen) Baumler, Zumbro Falls, MN; Edward Gehling, Decorah, IA; and Larry (Virginia) Gehling, Calmar, IA.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents: Florian on April 25, 1977 and LaVonne Gehling on June 16, 2005. His maternal grandparents: Martin Baumler on Dec. 18, 1971 and Esther Baumler on Sept. 11, 1981. His paternal grandparents: Anna Gehling on Nov. 11, 1980 and Roman Gehling Sept. 12, 2002. One aunt: Helen Gehling, Calmar, IA in 2007. Two uncles: Arlin Brynsaas in 1998 and Virgil Baumler in 1988.
