Harold I. Flatland, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, April 14, 2007 at his home.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah by Rev. Harriet Danielson. Private family burial will take place at a later date at Fremont Lutheran Cemetery, rural Cresco.
Harold Ingman Flatland was born December 1, 1919 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County Iowa, the son of Ole and Hilda Sophia (Lokkebo) Flatland. He was educated in Winneshiek County Country Schools and later earned his G.E.D.
He was united in marriage with Ardith Madonna Malli on October 19, 1944 in New York City. This union was blessed with seven children: Harold Jr., Zina, Barbara Diane, Myrna, Sally, Deborah and Angela.
Harold farmed in northwestern Winneshiek County for many years and also worked as a carpenter. He served his country during World War II in the United State Navy from September 1941 until his honorable discharge on October 27, 1945 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class.
His memberships include Fremont Lutheran Church of rural Cresco and Helof Holm V.F.W. Post 1977 of Decorah for over 60 years.
He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Ardith of Decorah; a son, Harold Flatland, Jr. of Cresco, IA; six daughters, Zina Dotzler of Cedar Rapids, IA, Barbara Diane Lucas of Rochester, MN, Myrna Flatland of Minneapolis, MN, Sally Harris of Afton, MN, Deborah Flatland of Spillville, IA and Angela Flatland of Tucson, AZ; six granddaughters, six grandsons; four great granddaughters and four great grandsons; a brother, Norman (Lenora) Flatland of Mabel, MN; two sisters, Clara Stegan of Decorah and Elise Stegan of Eastman, WI.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Hilda; three sisters, Annie, Elise and Hannah; and four brothers, Albert, Harold, Ole and Charlie.
