Maynard H. Fjelstul, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah of natural causes.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar by Rev. Norman Bauer with burial in Calmar Lutheran Cemetery in Calmar.
Friends may visit with the family one hour before services, at Calmar Lutheran Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.
Maynard H. Fjelstul was born February 10, 1920, in Lincoln Township, near Ridgeway, IA, the oldest of five children of Henry and Cora (Fjeld) Fjelstul. He was baptized March 7, 1920 in Ridgeway, IA and confirmed on June 3, 1934 at Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, IA. Maynard attended country school near Ridgeway, was a 1937 graduate of Calmar High School. He attended Luther College for one year and three years at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa.
He was united in marriage with Gladys Lorraine Eleanor Orke on June 14, 1942 at Calmar Lutheran Church by Rev. H. A. Preus. This union was blessed with four children: Roger, Barbara, Nancy and Jeffrey.
After their marriage, Maynard and Gladys lived in Waukon, IA for four years, they moved to Calmar where Maynard managed the Calmar Creamery Co for 14 years. They moved to Oneida, NY in 1962 and Maynard was the head butter maker for Dairylea Cooperative, Inc until his retirement in 1982. While in New York, Maynard received many Butter Maker awards.
During the first part of retirement, Maynard and Gladys wintered in Arizona. In September, 1994 they moved to Battlement Mesa, CO and then moved to Decorah, IA in September, 2001.
They were very active in church in the communities they lived in over the years, most recently at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Maynard was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bridge and walking.
Maynard died on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home where he had lived since February, 2007. He was 88 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Cora Fjelstul; wife, Gladys on December 24, 2005; two brothers: Norman Fjelstul in infancy and C. Richard Fjelstul.
He is survived by his four children: Roger (Rita) Fjelstul of Calmar, IA, Barbara (Allen) Finstad of Excelsior, MN, Nancy French of South Glens Falls, NY, and Jeffrey (Merilee) Fjelstul of Kenmore, WA; six grandchildren: Stacy (James) Riley of Decorah IA, Jeff (Barb) Fjelstul of Decorah, IA, Scott French of Lavern, AZ, Dustin (Pam) French of South Glens Falls, NY, Bailey Fjelstul and Gunnar Fjelstul, both of Kenmore, WA; and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Huber of San Jose, CA; one brother, Leslie (Rosemary) Fjelstul of Charles City, IA; nieces and nephews.
