Eleanor Ellingson, age 83, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Iowa River Cemetery, rural Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 9:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice or to Decorah Lutheran Church.

Eleanor Orris Jeanette (Iverson) Ellingson was born May 23, 1925, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Olaf and Elma (Tweet) Iverson. She was baptized at Iowa River Norwegian Lutheran Church and confirmed by the Rev. Christian Heltne at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1941 and from Waukon Junior College. She taught in rural schools in Ledyard, Iowa, and in Highlandville, Iowa. She was married to Clifford Tilman Ellingson on June 17, 1946, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. They were blessed with five children – Joyce, Julie, Janie, Jeff and Jean.

Eleanor worked in her home as her husband’s secretary during his forty-three years with the Banker’s Life Insurance Company, now the Principal Financial Group. In addition to being a wife, mother and secretary, she was active at Decorah Lutheran Church in Ladies Aid and Circle, choir, and as a children’s Sunday and Bible School teacher. She was also active in the community, serving on the Winneshiek County Physical Therapy Board for many years. Other civic activities included the Luther College Women’s Club, the West Side Study Club, the WINS Investment Club and the Decorah Rotary Club, of which she was an Honorary Member.

Eleanor’s survivors include her children: Joyce Ellingson, Charles City, IA; Julie (Ron) Moore, Springfield, VA; Janie (John) Smith, Vienna, VA; Jeffrey (Kathy) Ellingson, Decorah, IA; and Jean Battles, Decorah, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Erin Vanover, Travis and Justin Moore; Josh (Kari) Smith, Jeremy (Sarah) Smith, Jared Smith; Ben, Lars and Tyler Ellingson; and Cindy and Jamie Battles. Eleanor’s first great grandchild is due in November. Eleanor is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Merton (Marcy) Iverson, Decorah, IA; her brother-in-law Elvin Ranzenberger, Waukon, IA. Four sisters-in-law Viola (Mrs. Arnold) Ellingson, Waukon, IA; Thelma (Mrs. Erven) Ellingson, Decorah, IA; Bernice (Mrs. Mark) Byrnes, Postville, IA and Helen (Mrs. Don) Bergan, Decorah, IA. She is also survived by cousins, by many nieces and nephews, and by a growing number of great nieces and great nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clifford (October 21,1990); her brother and sister-in-law Orville and Bernice Iverson; her sister and brother-in-law Florence Ranzenberger and Cornell “Tom” Schrandt; her in-laws Elmer and Tilvina Bigler, Lester and Myrtle Bigler, Arnold Ellingson, Oscar and Irene Tilleros, Julius Ellingson, Erven Ellingson, Harold Opheim, Duane Wedo, Mark Byrnes and Don Bergan; and her son-in-law Bruce Battles.
