Loretta Ean, age 90, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 11, 2006, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar, Iowa. There will be a scripture service at 3:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Friends may also call after 1:00 p.m. at the church on Monday afternoon.
Loretta Veronica (Frana) Ean was born on June 16, 1916, the daughter of Louis and Rose (Korbel) Frana in Calmar, Iowa. Loretta graduated from Calmar High School in 1934 and then attended Dayless Business College in Dubuque, Iowa. Loretta worked at the Winneshiek County Court House in the Treasurer’s office for seven years. She married Norbert J. Ean on July 5, 1941, at All Saints Catholic Church in Buffalo, New York. From 1941 – 1946, Loretta worked Chevrolet Motor and Axel, which was a war plant in Buffalo, New York, that made Pratt and Whittney airplane motors. In September of 1946, she and her husband returned to Calmar, where they owned and operated the Ean Tavern until 1958. They lived in Calmar and raised their five children: Bruce, Claudette, Justin, Holly and Mary Beth. Loretta worked at the Cliff House in Decorah as a waitress for sixteen years. In 1977, Loretta began to work for the Iowa Liquor Commission and ran the Ossian Liquor Store for five years, retiring in 1981. Loretta was a sixty-one year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and held various positions over the years. Her favorite was being the Poppy Chairperson, where she wrote articles for the newspaper, created storefront window displays, gave speeches and distributed poppies on the local street corner. A few years ago, Loretta received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Loretta was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, Archdiocesan Counsel of Catholic Women, Calmar Senior Citizens, ARC-Association for Retarded Children and was a delegate to the Older Iowa Legislature.
Loretta’s survivors include her three daughters: Claudette (John) Lamprecht, Burnsville, MN; Holly (Alan) Keune, Maumelle, AR and Mary Beth Ean, Rochester, MN. One son: Jay (Renee) Ean, Rochester, MN. Seven grandchildren: Dustin Ean, Caleb and Marshall Keune, Joel and Christopher Lamprecht, Megan and BreAnna Ean. Two great grandchildren: Maggie Keune and Elizabeth Keune. Three sisters: Cloitel Kuennen, St. Lucas, IA; Jeanne (Arnold) Meyer, Calmar, IA and Rosemary Shaber, Lewiston, ID. Two brothers: John and David Frana, both of Decorah, IA.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Rose Frana; her husband, Norbert on June 26, 1975; one son: Bruce on May 27, 2005; one sister: Genevieve Rose and one brother: Louis Frana, Jr.
