Orene I. Docken, age 97, of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 25, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Richard Simon Hanson officiating.

Orene Ione (Madson) Docken was born February 21, 1913, the oldest of six children to Embert and Emma (Saetre) Madson in Stanhope, Iowa. She graduated from high school in 1930. For the next three years she studied violin and music theory at The American Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois. She then attended Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa from 1934 to 1936 and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa from 1936 to 1938. Following her college graduation she taught public school music in New Sharon, Iowa for three years.

Orene was united in marriage to Adrian M. Docken in Stanhope, Iowa in 1941. This union was blessed with four children; Paul, Phillip, Peter and Sigrid.

After their marriage, they moved to Evanston, Illinois where Adrian was a post-doctoral research fellow at Northwestern University. In 1942 they moved to Decorah and began over 60 years of college and community life including very active membership at First Lutheran Church and later at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Orene’s special lifetime interest and skill in the area of music greatly enriched her family and community. She conducted high school and church choirs and string ensembles. Her wide experience as a violinist included solo performances, chamber music and symphony orchestras. She was a member of the American Conservatory Symphony in Chicago, the Chicago Heights Symphony, the Luther College Symphony as well as the Stanford University Chamber Orchestra and the Foothill College Symphony in California. Orene was a violin teacher in the Decorah area for nearly 50 years giving instruction to countless children and adults.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Adrian on November 27, 2003, her daughter Sigrid Docken Mount in May 2003, her three bothers Clifton, Norman, and Ingram Madson; and her two sisters Sigrid Mayer and Emmerett Brown.

Orene is survived by her three sons: Paul (Toni May) of Decorah, IA, Phillip of Minneapolis, MN, and Peter (Sandra Gust) of Monticello, MN; one son-in-law Joe Mount of Winona, MN; five grandchildren: Liza, Dulcy, Catherine, Madelyn and Jacob; one great-granddaughter, Babbett Mae; and fifteen nieces and nephews.
