Melvin L. Bruening, age 73, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in rural Bluffton, IA by Rev. Richard Ament with private family inurnment in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, November 26 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah.
Melvin Leo Bruening was born January 27, 1934 at home in Festina, Iowa, the son of Edward J. and Amy (Homewood) Bruening. Melvin attended rural school in Bluffton Township through the eighth grade. He then began farming with his father on the family farm in Bluffton Township.
He was united in marriage to Betty L. Vine on September 7, 1967 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
Melvin farmed until 1980 when he and Betty moved to Durant, OK. He worked there for Bryan County as a truck driver retiring in 1995. They then moved back to Decorah and he drove a semi truck for area farmers, hauling grain. He also drove a school bus for North Winneshiek schools until 2003 when he retired.
Melvin was a former member of the Winneshiek County Saddle Club. He liked to collect John Deere tractors and belt buckles. He also enjoyed restoring toy riding tractors and attending auctions. He was an avid reader and was a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club for years.
Melvin became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home on Wednesday, November 21, 2007.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Amy in 1978; one brother, Kenneth in January 1984; one sister, Rita Ott in December 2001; and a nephew, Craig Ott in May 2006.
Melvin is survived by his wife Betty of Decorah; three children: Cindy (Fred) Leonhart of Decorah, Bonnie (Joe) Doty of Orlando, FL, and Dennis (Karen) Christopherson of Fairfax, IA; his father, Edward J. Bruening of Decorah; seven grandchildren: Jamie Doty, Jennifer Doty, Lance Corporal Garrett Doty, Melissa Christopherson, John Christopherson, Jason Leonhart and Kristin (Ryan) Tyler; three great-grandchildren: Mikya Doty, Keenan Tyler and Destynee Stern; two brothers: Dale (Shirley) Bruening of Cedar Rapids, and Darrell Bruening of Decorah; and by several nieces and nephews.
