Arthur Theodore Branhagen was born July 11, 1917, the son of William A. and Tilda O. (Bringsjord) Branhagen in Decorah, IA. He was both baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Koren. The family lived in Decorah until Art was two, and then moved to the Branhagen family farm near Nordness, IA, which had been farmed by his great-grandfather, Thorston Branhagen, his grandfather, Andrew, and his father, William. He attended the Red Oak School in Springfield Township, near his farm, for eight years.

He was united in marriage to Elsie C. Winger on August 22, 1940, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. The marriage was blessed with two sons: Arlin and Darrel.

Art and Elsie farmed near Nordness on the family farm for nearly fifty years. Art was active in both the Nordness softball team and the church dartball team. He served as the last director of the Red Oak School. Art was also very active in the life of the Washington Prairie Church, as usher, trustee, and deacon. Art liked playing cards with all of his friends and neighbors, John Deere tractors, the Chicago Cubs and railroad trains. They moved to Decorah in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie on August 29, 1995, his parents, his sister, Olga Omdahl, and his brother, Willard. Art is survived by his two sons, Arlin of Decorah and Ames, IA and Darrel (Betty) of DeSoto, TX; two grandchildren, Andrew of Arlington, TX and Sarah of Austin, TX; and by two brothers, Lester (Ruth) of Decorah and Henry (Connie) of Waterloo, IA.
