Doris Blaess, age 98, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 25, 2011, at the Burr Oak Lutheran in Burr Oak, Iowa, with Rev. Matt Larson presiding. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Doris Caroline (Blomgren) Blaess was born a twin on July 25, 1913, the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Jewell) Blomgren near Ridgeway, Iowa. Doris was baptized and confirmed at the Orleans Lutheran Church and she attended country school in Orleans Township. Doris married Richard L. Blaess on March 30, 1933, at the Burr Oak Parsonage in Burr Oak, Iowa. Together they farmed near Burr Oak for many years, before they moved into Burr Oak in 1974. Doris enjoyed taking care of her flowers, watching TV shows with polka music and animals. She especially enjoyed her cats and above all her family and grandchildren. Doris was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church.
Doris is survived by her five children: Richard C. (Phyllis) Blaess, Burr Oak, IA; Donna (friend, Lee Eberling) Knoke, Decorah, IA; Darold (Arlene) Blaess, Canton, MN; Jean (friend, Terry Shedd) Florian, Akron, CO; and George (Caraline) Blaess, St. Paris, OH. One son-in-law: Lynn Kerns, Prosper, MN, along with twenty-one grandchildren, fifty great grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren. Two sisters: Mabel Hovden, Tucson, AZ, and Liola (Bob) Hinneman, Evansdale, IA.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Mabel (Jewell) Blomgren. Her husband: Richard L. Blaess on Nov. 18, 1989. One daughter: Pauline Kerns on June 22, 2005 and three babies in infancy. One grandson: Israel Blaess in 1968. Three sons-in-law: Lyle Knoke in 2003; Gilman Tangen in 1986; and Paul Florian in 2004. One brother: Carl “Buster” (Naomi) Blomgren. Eleven sisters: Ella (Joe) Albertson, Florence Anderson, Ruth (Garvin) Rue, Maude (Herbert) Albertson, her twin, Dorothy Eidenshink, Cora Eiler, Rose (Ed) Ratzliff, Aleida (Elwood “Duke”) Olson, Pearl (Bob) Frisch, Opal Ellerman, and Josephine Nabholz. One sister-in-law: Pearl (Howard) Walter. Two brothers-in-law: Floyd (Gladys) Blaess and Leonard Blaess.
