Julia A. Bergsrud, age 92, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, one hour before services, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Julia Anna (Young) Bergsrud was born on June 22, 1916 at her family home in rural Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Barth) Young. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust, Iowa. Julia attended grade school in Decorah and was a 1934 graduate of Decorah High School. She attended Pitzies Beauty School in Waterloo, Iowa and worked as a beautician at Toby’s and a clerk at J.C. Penny in Decorah.

She was united in marriage with Herbert A. “Huns” Bergsrud on June 25, 1938 by Rev. Kent at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. This union was blessed with two daughters: Mary Jo and Sharon.

Following her marriage to Huns, Julia helped in various businesses in Decorah that they owned and operated. She had been active in the Decorah Lutheran Church and held several offices in the ladies circles. While the children were little she was a Brownie leader. She volunteered with Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital and Aase Haugen Home. She was a seamstress and enjoyed sewing and handwork. She had flower and vegetable gardens and believed in a healthy life style which included exercise and walking.

Julia became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in March, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband Huns on July 28, 2002; her parents; one brother, Roy Young; and four sisters: Lydia Sherwin, Clara Solem, Lenna Erickson, and Amelia Sande.

She is survived by her two daughters: Mary Jo and her husband, Don Benda of Decorah, Iowa and Sharon and her husband, Curt Headington of Mount Vernon, Iowa; six grandchildren: Kirk and his wife, Jane Benda of Woodstock, Illinois, Kim Benda of Rochester, Minnesota, Kallie and her husband, Mike Sheehan of Wausau, Wisconsin, Kolice and her husband, Cory Koester of Des Moines, Iowa, Jahn and his wife, Sandy Headington of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Amy Headington of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
