Bennie C. Benson, age 92, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Barthell O.E.S. Nursing Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Allen Vik and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. on Monday October 13, 2008 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a prayer service at 7 P.M. Friends may also call after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at the church.

Bennie C. Benson was born April 21, 1916, in Ashcroft, South Dakota, the son of Gilbert and Minnie (Larson) Benson. He attended rural school in Jamestown, ND. Bennie and the Blekeberg brothers hopped the train from North Dakota to Decorah to find work. He worked for Bill McCall in his mechanical shop in Decorah and then he worked at the Coryell service station in Decorah. He served as a Corporal in the U. S. Army from August 17, 1942 to February 11, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Mae Frances Lien on August 1, 1943, in the Glenwood Lutheran Church Parsonage in rural Decorah by Rev. Alfred E. Bredeson. This union was blessed with three daughters: Mary, Beverly and Nancy.

Bennie was self-employed operating the Bennie C. Benson Plumbing, Heating & Electrical Service. He also plowed a lot of snow for many businesses and driveways during the winter months, plowed many gardens for people and also did custom work. Bennie built his own house in Decorah. Bennie was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church. Bennie became a resident of the M. Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah November 20, 2006.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mae, on November 10, 2006; three sisters: Gladys Thelen, Myrtle Schutt and Lillian Rowell; three brothers: Arnold, Kenneth and Edward Benson; and twin brothers in infancy, Melvin and Gerhard.

Bennie is survived by three daughters, Mary Benson of Decorah, Beverly (Roger) Roed of Decorah, and Nancy Benson of Cedar Rapids, IA; seven grandchildren: Ryan Schall of Springfield, MO, Dawn (Christopher) Fenneman of Woodstock, IL, Darren Rance of West Union, IA, Bruce (Tina Marie) Michels of Hesper, IA, Tina (Joe) Langreck of Lawler, IA, Daniel Michels of Decorah, and Tammy Michels of Calmar, IA; eleven great-grandchildren: Zebadiah Fenneman, Mariah, Mallory and Camren Rance, Bryce, Maddison and Robert Michels, Luke and Lance Langreck, Alan and Tiffany Michels; two sisters: Pearl Pruess of Mesa, AZ and Freda Telken of Jamestown, ND; and two brothers: Burton Benson and Gilbert (Delphine) Benson Jr., both of Jamestown, ND.
