Roger E. Bengtson, age 91, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Graveside services and burial will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, Minnesota by Rev. Barbara Finley- Shea.
Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 27, 2007 a Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
Roger Edgar Bengtson was born May 18, 1915 in New Rockford, North Dakota. He was the son of Eddie and Beatrice (Craig) Bengtson. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Congregational Church in New Rockford, N.D. He graduated from New Rockford High School. While in high school, he participated in track and set a record in 1934 for the 100 yard dash in 10.3 seconds. This record was held until it was broken in 1955.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Nelson on October 21, 1942 in the Methodist Church, New Rockford, N.D. To this union 3 children were born, Karen, Gary, and Douglas.
In 1943 he was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal in Davenport, Iowa. When he left Davenport, he managed the Lyle Coop service station in Lyle, Minnesota. In 1948, he moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota where he managed the Freeborn Cooperative service station until l953. In l953, Roger and his family moved to Decorah, Iowa where he managed the Midland Cooperative Service Station until his retirement July l978. After retirement, he and Shirley traveled the United States visiting family and friends.
Roger was a member of First Lutheran Church and active in the church serving on the communion committee, men's breakfast committee, and ushering. Roger enjoyed spending time with his children, grand children, and great- grandchildren, even taking them on day trips with him and his wife.
He entered Aase Haugen Home in March, 2004 due to failing health. He died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Home at the age of 91 years.
Roger is survived by his three children: Karen (Bob) Spilde, Decorah, Gary (Christine) Bengtson of DeSoto WI., and Douglas (Connie) Bengtson of Charles City, IA; six grandchildren, Kim Holthaus, Scott Spilde, Sara Spilde, John Bengtson, Tiffany Bilharz, and Alyssa Gallup; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kyle and Christopher Hovden, Paige and Lacey Holthaus, Jarrett and Justin Spilde, Alexander Richardson, Christopher Bengtson, Morgan, Madelyn, McCoy Bilharz, Marissa Bengtson, Carson Gallup, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley on December 26, 2004, his parents, his brother Gordon, and two sisters, Mary Hudson and Ruth Lies.
