Evelyn M. Underbakke, age 96 of Mabel, Minnesota and formerly of Burr Oak, Iowa, died Monday, October 10, 2005 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 15, 2005 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church by Rev. Allen Hermeier, with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, October 14, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

Evelyn Marie Underbakke was born December 9, 1908 near Castalia, Iowa, the oldest daughter of John and Tillie (Peck) DeCou. She attended grade school in Ossian, Iowa and rural schools in Bloomfield Township and was a graduate of Ossian Public High School in 1926. She graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa in 1928 with her teaching certificate, then attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota for two years and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree for Primary Teaching from Iowa State Teachers College (now U.N.I.) in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1941.

Evelyn taught school for a number of years in the following places, Castalia, Waterville and Rowley, Iowa; Downers Grove, Illinois; Eaton Rapids, Michigan and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She always took an active part in the community where she was teaching. In 1932 and 1946 she taught bible school for one week in the Methodist Church in Burr Oak.

She was united in marriage to Melvin S. Underbakke on November 2, 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Canton, Minnesota. To this union, two daughters were born: Karen and Melva.

She became a member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church in 1947. Evelyn was an active member of her church and taught Sunday School in the primary department for many years. Evelyn was interested in community affairs and helped in the organization of the North Winneshiek School District. For several years she was a volunteer manager for the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and in 1986, she developed a few acres of land to have building lots hooked up with sewer and water service in Burr Oak.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin on July 22, 1985; her daughter, Karen Keast on September 24, 2001; a sister, Mary Gundersen; an infant brother, Leslie DeCou and a brother Paul DeCou.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Melva Underbakke and her husband Ted Micceri of Temple Terrace, Florida; five grandchildren, Joe Bird, Rick Bird, Adam Bird, Lars Underbakke and Juan Underbakke; seven great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and a brother, Donald (Anna Grace) DeCou of Decorah, Iowa.
