Gordon was born October 23, 1930 in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa the son of Edgar and Olga (Rotvold) Thorson. He became a child of God through his faith in baptism and confirmation at the Hesper Lutheran Church. He received his education at the Rotvold School.

On January 31, 1953 he married Elsie Bronner. They are the parents of four children LuAnn , Dean, Lori, and Betsy. They farmed the home place and have remained there since. He was a lifelong member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and several farm organizations. Gordon loved spending time with his children, granddaughters, and great granddaughters. He also enjoyed farming, and repairing cars, trucks, tractors, and machinery. He was ready to help anyone who was in need of advice or a helping hand to repair anything. He enjoyed going sightseeing and would just start out with no special destination.

Gordon passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa at the age of 78.

Gordon is survived by his wife Elsie of Decorah ; a son Dean of Decorah; three daughters LuAnn (Jim) Everett of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Lori (Don) Van Duyn of Decorah, and Betsy of Luana, Iowa; Megan (Ben) Britten and Kristen Everett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and great granddaughters Kaitlyn and Lily. He was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Olga; and a sister Eleanor.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 7PM Wednesday, January 21 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
