Virgil R. Stortz, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, June 20, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Decorah Lutheran Church by the Rev. Bryan Robertson with burial in Hauge Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, June 24, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.
Virgil R. Stortz was born April 21, 1924 on the home farm in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Carl and Luella (Thompson) Stortz. He was educated in Country School in Pleasant Township.
He was united in marriage to Margaret Halvorson on May 5, 1946 at Hauge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah by Pastor Carl Losen. To this union, five children were born: Diane, Beverly, Loren and Lowell and a daughter who died in infancy.
Virgil and Margaret farmed in Winneshiek County for many years, retiring and moving into Decorah in November 1981. Virgil was an auctioneer and managed the Winneshiek Co-op Sale Barn for many years. After moving into town, he worked as a security guard at Luther College and later started a saw sharpening business and became interested in collecting gas engines.
A life-long resident of Winneshiek County, he was an active member of Hauge Lutheran Church for many years. He served as Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the Church Council, Call Committee and was a Youth Group Leader. He later became a member of First Lutheran Church and then Decorah Lutheran Church. Virgil served on the Board of Directors of the Winneshiek Co-op, and was a member of Winneshiek County Fair Board, Decorah Coin Club and the City of Decorah Board of Adjustment. He enjoyed fishing in Minnesota with Melvin Engelhardt and in Canada with Paul Nichols.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Decorah; four children, Diane Stortz of Edmonds, WA., Bev (Paul) Nichols of Decorah, Loren (Carol) Stortz of Elgin, MN., Lowell (Debra) Stortz of Edina, MN; twelve grandchildren, Jason Richardson, Nathan Richardson, Andrea Richardson, B.J. (Laura) Nichols, Benji Nichols, Megan Gluth, Carl Stortz, Ethan Stortz, Hannah Stortz, Evan Stortz, Matthew Stortz and Kristen Stortz; one great grandson, Wilson Allebach Nichols; and two sisters, Marjorie Severson of Decorah and Lorraine (Walter) Teslow of Waukon, IA.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter and a brother-in-law, Everett Severson.
