Stella T. Sorenson, age 94 of Decorah, Iowa died on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.
Funeral Service is at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2005 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, IA.
Visitation is on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home and on Thursday after 10:00 am at the church.
Stella Theressa (Moe) Sorenson was born June 26, 1910 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Mina (Prestsater) Moe. She was baptized on July 24, 1910 and confirmed on April 26, 1925 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. She attended Country School in Glenwood Township.
She was united in marriage to Melvin Arthur Sorenson on June 26, 1938 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born: Robert Arthur and Carol Jean.
Stella devoted her life to being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Stella’s talents for creating delicious foods and pastries were enjoyed by all of her family. She especially loved time spent with family. Stella and Mel liked to garden together and took pride in their tomato plants. Stella especially enjoyed her rose bushes. Family birthday parties and euchre games were special events for her. Stella was very proud of her Norwegian Heritage.
Stella and Mel joined First Lutheran Church after their marriage. Stella served as a Deaconess there for several years. Her faith was a very important part of her life. She was also a member of the Decorah VFW Auxiliary.
When Stella could no longer live alone she moved to her son’s home. With wonderful help from Dr. Greene and his nurse, Cindy, the Winneshiek County Nurses Office, Northland Agency on Aging and Loving Touch , and the visits from First Lutheran pastors, Deaconess's and the Parish Nurse, she was able to remain at their home for 4 years. She enjoyed many family activities and visits during this time. On November 29, 2004, as cancer weakened her, she moved to the Aase Haugen Home. “Grandma Stella,” as she was called not only by her grandchildren but also their friends, she was also affectionately called "Aunt Sally" by her nieces and nephews. Stella, had a large extended family which included all of her caretakers.
On Sunday, January 16, 2005, Stella lost her battle with cancer. She died at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah at the age of 94. Her family will miss her greatly. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin on June 1, 1975; 3 brothers: Juel, Alert and Merlin Moe; and 3 sisters: Myrtle Hagen, Esther Rovang and Arlene Fagerlie.
She is survived by her two children, Robert (Marlene) Sorenson of Decorah, IA; and Carol (Dave) Wilcox of Oceanside, CA; 5 grandchildren: Scott Sorenson, Karen (George) Bies; Kyle Sorenson, Paul Wilcox and Kristin Wilcox; 6 great-grandchildren: Kristofer Alvarez, Zachery Sorenson, Samantha Bies, Christian Bies, Justine Bies and Rylan Sorenson; one brother, Carl Moe of Decorah, IA., and also a very special friend, Bev Christen of Decorah.
