Olive Luella Sime was born October 4, 1905 in Ridgeway, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Tilda (Rue) Gullickson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway. She went through the Ridgeway School System, taking her senior year of high school in Cresco and graduating from Cresco High School in 1924. Olive attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (U.N.I.) for two years, earning a teaching certificate. She taught in the Ridgeway and Decorah School Systems while she helped her sister Bessie attend college. She returned to Iowa State Teacher’s College and graduated in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. While at college, she was elected to Kappa Delta Phi. Following her graduation she taught music in Correctionville and Ames, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Orlando T. Sime on June 24, 1936 at Lincoln Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Treva, David and Donald.

She and Orlando farmed the Sime family farm, south of Ridgeway until 1988. As a homemaker on the farm, Olive raised her children, provided marvelous meals and lunches to the farming crew, kept a large garden and filled her home with evidences of her talent and handicrafts. She earned a reputation as a wonderful cook. Friends and family especially remember her legendary butterhorn rolls.

In 1956, Olive renewed her teaching certificate and taught fourth grade at Ridgeway Elementary School, retiring in 1967. She is fondly remembered by the children of the Ridgeway community who were fortunate to have her as a classroom or piano teacher.

Olive was a longtime member of the Lincoln Lutheran Church and later, Peace Lutheran Church of Ridgeway. Olive served her church and community as organist, choir director and piano teacher. She was active in her church circle and Ladies Aide, volunteered in her children’s school and 4H activities, and served on the Winneshiek County Board of Education.

Following their retirement, Olive and Orlando built a home in Ridgeway to enjoy their retirement years. Throughout her life, Olive endured several major illnesses and surgeries. She fought these illnesses bravely and successfully, often to the amazement of her doctors. She and Orlando became residents of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah in April 2001.
