Frank A. Reed, age 90, of Burr Oak, IA, died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at his home of lung cancer.

Due to the winter storm the weekend of January 22nd, Memorial Services have been re-scheduled for Saturday January 29, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Burr Oak Lutheran Church by Rev. Curtis Fox. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Burr Oak Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. His body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Fjelstul Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Frank Arthur Reed was born June 30, 1914 at home in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Clifford Melvin and Maude Vesta (Pierce) Reed. He attended Country School and graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1932. In High School, he was active in Baseball and the Drama Club.

He was united in marriage to Ethel Aleda Brown on April 11, 1934 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. To this union, two children were born: Rosalyn and Clifford.

From 1934 to 1941 Frank and Ethel farmed in the Burr Oak area, and he was a day worker and he owned his own truck for hauling livestock. In 1941, the couple moved to Rock Island, IL. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, Edwards Auto Sales and some part-time work as a taxi driver. He continued to play baseball in a semi-pro league across the river in Davenport, IA.

In 1950, the couple relocated to Lakewood California. Frank worked for Englander Mattress Company and later, Douglas (now Boeing) Aircraft where he worked until his retirement. Frank was actively involved in the incorporation of Lakewood as a city, and he served as a planning commissioner for ten years. Frank and Ethel were active members of Holy Spirit Mission Church in Lakewood where they helped build membership. In their fourties, the couple became active in Little League and Frank served as a coach. Frank also became interested in Real Estate and took classes to obtain his real estate license. He loved handiwork and would fix up homes for resale. The couple returned to Iowa in 1978, first living for a short time in Oelwein and later returning to Burr Oak.

Over the years, Frank enjoyed baseball, hunting, fishing, gardening, and reading. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and visits with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, William “Bill” Jacobson; his wife, Ethel on November 23, 2001; two infant sisters, and infant brother and his beloved dog, Buffy.

Survivors include his two children, Rosalyn Lee of Burr Oak, IA.; Clifford (Paula) Reed of Oelwein, IA.; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; a brother, Carroll Jacobson of Burr Oak, IA.
