Alta M. Nelson, age 84, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Service is on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa, by Rev. Philip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson with burial in the Madison Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Thursday after 10:00 am at the church.

Alta Mae Nelson was born August 20, 1920 in Bluffton Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Claude H. and Blanche (Benson) Iverson. She was baptized on Sunday, September 26, 1920 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway and later confirmed on May 19, 1935 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Alta attended Decorah Schools and graduated from Decorah High School.

Alta was united in marriage to Austin T. Nelson on October 22, 1947 by the Rev. M. B. Quill at Madison Lutheran Church Parsonage, rural Ridgeway. The couple made their home in Decorah for their entire lives, except for five years when they lived in Griffith, Indiana. Alta and Austin owned and operated Nelson Well Drilling and worked side by side for many years, working as the bookkeeper and sales person for the business. Alta also worked as a sales clerk at McNeil’s and Elaine’s ladies clothing stores in Decorah. Austin preceded her in death on October 11, 1983.

Alta was a member of Madison Lutheran Church and was actively involved with Madison WELCA, holding several offices in the organization. She also was a past Sunday school teacher. Alta loved her home and garden. She was a wonderful cook and liked entertaining company. Alta enjoyed attending auctions, a good card game with friends and working with ceramics. She had been a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah since December 19, 2003.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Maxine Iverson of Prairie Du Chien, WI.; three special nephews, Bryce (Mary) Iverson and their son, Chris Iverson and his children, Avery, Christopher and Diamond, of Prairie Du Chien, WI., Mark (Margaret) Iverson of Summerville, SC and David (Debra) Iverson of Cottageville, SC; an uncle, Harold Henderson of Albert Lea, MN. and many other nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Alta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Irvin J. Iverson.
