Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the Church, where the family will greet friends. His body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

Alfred Orlando Moen was born March 26, 1916 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Torgie and Gustie (Basol) Moen. He was baptized April 30, 1916 and confirmed June 22, 1930 at Decorah Lutheran Church. Alfred graduated from Decorah high School with the class of 1934.

He was united in marriage with Ethel Lunningdal on November 9, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Roberta, Ronald, Karen and Ross.

Alfred was a baker at the Dotseth Bakery in Decorah from the time he was 14 until he entered the Navy in 1942. While in the service he served as a baker as well. When he was discharged from the Navy he farmed in the northwest part of Winneshiek County. Alfred really enjoyed farming and developed a very good dairy herd. He went to Agriculture classes that were taught by the late Olaf Kjome of Spring Grove and had great respect for him. After several years he took a second job as a baker in Harmony, MN and then in Cresco, IA, and later in Decorah. He eventually sold the farm and became a janitor in the Cresco schools. This was a great job for him because it gave him a chance to be among kids, whom he adored. Alfred and Ethel later moved off the farm into the Ridgeway Apartments. His devotion to Ethel was beyond reproach as he took care of her at home during illness for several years. Ethel passed away in October of 1985. Alfred moved to the Oneota Riverview Care Facility when he could no longer drive. That was his home for the past 8 years.

Alfred loved music, especially classical and religious music. He was a real history buff and he especially enjoyed reading about World Wars I and II. He was proud of his time spent in the Navy. He was also an avid sports fan, particularly Iowa Hawkeye football and wrestling. He loved to visit and loved a good game of pool, a good joke and a good cup of coffee (not decaffeinated), as well as rummegrote. Alfred was very proud of his children and grandchildren and was interested in whatever they were doing. His greatest loves in his life were his wife and his God, and he longed to be united with both.

Alfred died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility at the age of 88, following a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel, in October of 1985; 1 grandson: Craig Alan Melaas; 3 brothers: Kenneth, Melvin and Selmar Moen; 3 sisters: Clarissa Halloran, Gertrude Meier and Helen Scott; and 1 sister-in-law: Hazel Dybvik.

He is survived by his 4 children: Roberta (Wallace) Blekeberg of Decorah, Ronald (Gayle) Moen of Caledonia, MN, Karen Tanner of Mississippi and Ross (Luann) Moen of Cresco, IA; 10 grandchildren: Lori Schutte, Doug Melaas, Eric Melaas, Nicole Moen, Kimberly Moen, Chelsey Moen, Christine Moen, and John Moen, David Tanner and Tonja Tanner; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law, Orval Dybvik of Harmony, MN and Lorraine Meier of Garnavillo, IA; 2 sisters-in-law, Hazel Moen of Decorah and Ethel Moen of Elkader; and several nieces and nephews.
