Tom was born January 3, 1920 in Clayton County, Iowa, the first child of Vlad E. and Mary E. (Moses) Macha. The family moved to Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in 1933, where Tom has resided since. He attended local country schools and the Canton High School, and then became a full time farmer before entering the United States Army in 1944. He served during World War II in Europe with the 99th Infantry Division. He was issued the combat infantry badge and three battle stars for the Battle of the Bulge, Remagen Bridgehead, and the Ruhr Pocket.
Tom was a lifetime member of the Mabel American Legion Post #299 and an active member of their Drill Squad / Color Guard since 1954. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5769, and a member of the Mabel Sportsman’s Club. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, and after retirement he enjoyed gardening and baking.
Tom was united in marrieage to Mary L. Whalen on June 29, 1944. Together they farmed and raised two daughters Eileen Poole (Roy Tucker) of Warren, Ohio and Denise (Harold) Pederson of Decorah, Iowa who survive him.
Tom passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011 at his home at the age of 91.
Also surviving are granddaughter Vanessa (Richard) Teuscher; two great granddaughters Kylie Youlan and Mary Katherine; special friend Genevieve Harvey; a brother Edwin (Alice) Macha of Decorah; two sisters Irene Kofoed of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Carol ( Larry) Quillian of Washington D.C.; a sister-in-law Ann Courtney of Deocorah; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Tom in death were his wife Mary on March 23, 2000, his parents, and a sister Frances.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Public Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 PM Monday at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the Church.
