Mike was born July 21, 1961 in Caledonia, Minnesota to Merlyn and Marilyn (Masters) Helland. He was baptized and confirmed at the Hesper Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. He was a 1979 graduate from the North Winneshiek High School where he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America. Mike farmed with his father for several years and had now worked for Winneshiek Coop for the last eleven years.
Mike was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church where he had participated in the choir. He also enjoyed roller skating, attending the Iowa State Fair, and collecting toy John Deere tractors, toy semis, and other toy implements.
Mike passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010 at his home after a ten year battle with cancer at the age of 48.
Mike is survived by his parents Merlyn and Marilyn of rural Decorah; a brother Steven (Deanna) of Phoenix, Arizona; three sisters Diane (Gene) Tesmer of Knob Noster, Missouri, Cindy (Philip) Nagel of Harmony, Minnesota, and Lisa (Richard) Nielsen of Decorah; aunts and uncles Robert and Doris Doely, Paul and Joanne Helland, and Ellen Waters; nine nieces and nephews; and eight great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Chester and Hannah Helland, and Lyle and Sena Masters.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 8 PM Tuesday, February 2 at the Hesper Lutheran Church and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials to the Hesper Lutheran Church or Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice are preferred.
