John G. Gabrielsen, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, 2005 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Friends may call from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Monday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

John G. Gabrielsen was born in Bay Ridge, in Brooklyn, New York, on February 11, 1920, the son of John G. Gabrielsen, Sr. and Olga (Abrahamsen) Gabrielsen, who emigrated from Norway in 1906 and 1908. John spoke Norwegian and English as he was growing up, attending school in Bay Ridge, and graduating from Brooklyn Polytechnic High School and New York Polytechnic Institute, where he earned in B.S. in mechanical engineering. He worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II, and later for Nabisco in Manhattan.

In 1945 he married Marion Oswald from New Ulm, Minnesota. They lived in Bay Ridge, and later in Syracuse, New York and Westmont, Illinois, where John worked for Interstate Breads. They raised two daughters, Diane and Jeanne. John took an active role in Bethany Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, serving as Sunday school teacher, and on the Building Committee. He was also a member of the board of Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn and, later, on the board of Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago. With his family, he enjoyed taking trips to historical sites, and spent time at home working on carpentry and building projects.

In 1982, after retirement, he and his wife moved to their country home in Fishkill, New York, a house his father had built in the 1920s. He enjoyed the peaceful serenity of the Hudson Valley, both its beauty and its history. In 1999, John and Marion moved to Decorah to live in Vennehjem.

John is survived by his wife, Marion, and by his daughters, Diane (Peter) Scholl of Decorah and Jeanne (Michael) Anderegg of Grand Forks, ND; by his two sons-in-law, and four grandchildren (Emily Scholl, Laura Scholl, Timothy Anderegg, and Niles Anderegg) and by his cousin, Ingrid Olsen of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, Carl Arne Gabrielsen.

Memorials can be given to Aase Haugen Homes, to Barthell Eastern Star Home or to First Lutheran Church, all of Decorah.
