James L. Carolan, age 73, of Decorah, Iowa, and formerly of Lawler, IA. died Friday, December 24, 2004 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI., following a short illness.

Funeral Mass is on Monday, December 27, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Gary F. Krapfl. Burial with Full Military Honors, will be held at 2:00 PM Monday December 27, 2004 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler, IA.

Visitation is on Sunday, December 26, 2004 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home, where a V.F.W. Memorial Service will be held at 4 P.M. Sunday. Friends may also call from 9:00-10:30 A.M. Monday at the Funeral Home.

James Leo Carolan was born February 19, 1931 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Frank and Alice (Whalen) Carolan. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Shirley A. Roths on November 21, 1951 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, Iowa. To this union six children were born: Mary Ann, Jim, Angie, Pat, Chris and Julie.

Following High School, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force. The couple then moved back to the local area and he operated the C and R Feed and Livestock Service in Lawler. Jim also worked as a cross-country truck driver and he farmed for many years in the Lawler area. He retired in 2000 and the couple moved to Decorah, where Jim worked as a realtor. Jim was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler and St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah; the American Legion Post in Lawler, where he was a past commander and chaplain; and he was a member of the Decorah V.F.W. Post.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers, Eugene, Robert, Charles, and three infant brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Decorah, IA; six children, Mary Ann (Mark) Marsters of Pueblo, CO; Jim (Sue) Carolan, Jr. of Panama City Beach, FL; Angie (Bill) Larsen of Grand Rapids, MN; Pat (Cheryl) Carolan of Waucoma, IA; Chris (John) Stoltzfus of Glenwood Springs, CO; Julie (Ken) Girardini of Sykesville, MD; eleven grandchildren, Meghan, Natalie and Carolyn Marsters, Morgan and McKenzie Carolan, Stevie and Lauren Larsen, Sonya, Monica, Blake and Cole Carolan; one great-grandson, Caden Hund; two sisters, Ann Marie Ellingson and Bernadette Nosbisch both of Cresco, IA; two brothers, Francis (Madonna) Carolan of Charles City, IA, and Paul Carolan of Bullhead City, AZ and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
