Art Zidlicky, age 82, of Spillville, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 21, 2005 at his home following a long illness.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Kim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military rites.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa. Friends may also call after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the Memorial Service at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Melvin Zidlicky was born on March 27, 1923 to John and Marie (Lomica) Zidlicky on a farm near Saratoga, Iowa. Art attended rural schools near Lime Springs and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1941. While in high school, he played basketball and football. He then farmed with his father for a short time. Art married Gatriel Mardel Thompson on April 23, 1944 in Chester, Iowa. Art then served during World War II in the Philippines and Japan; he served in the infantry and was a cook. After the service, Art worked for Armstrong Truck from Chester, IA and farmed. They moved to Nevada, Iowa and farmed before returning to the Lime Springs area in 1949. They farmed near Bonaire and Cresco and then moved to Decorah in 1969. He farmed prior to opening Zid’s Feed & Supply and was a DeLaval Dealer. Art retired and moved to Spillville, Iowa in 1989. Art enjoyed coon hunting and ice fishing with his grandchildren. He liked dairy farming; flower gardening, cooking and playing Santa Claus. Art was an avid sports fan and always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren while they participated in sports, especially wrestling. Art enjoyed sharing Norwegian jokes with everyone. Art was a member of the VFW and the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Art’s survivors include his wife, Gatriel “Gay” Zidlicky, Spillville, IA. One daughter: Mary (Ron) Oyloe Decorah, IA. Five sons: Gary Zidlicky & friend Nancy Elsbernd, Decorah, IA; Dennis (Donna) Zidlicky, Decorah, IA; Dave (Bonnie) Zidlicky, Ridgeway, IA; John (Joan) Zidlicky, Calmar, IA and Alan Zidlicky & friend Bill Torrey, Phoenix, AZ. Fifteen grandchildren: Dean Zidlicky, Don (Karrie) Zidlicky, Lisa (Tony) Myers; Mike Zidlicky; Travis, John & Christopher Zidlicky; Derek & Jason Oyloe; Brandi, Michelle, Kari, Jaclyn, Sondra and Sarah Zidlicky. Four great grandchildren: Colin, Carter, Cody and Dalton. Four sisters-in-law: Palma Zidlicky, Decorah, IA; Laura Zidlicky, Morton, IL; Beth Sheeley, Coralville, IA and Donna Hanson, LeRoy, MN. Two brothers-in-law: Milt Obermeier, Charles City, IA and Dean (LaVonne) Thompson, Riceville, IA; a special family friend, LaVonne Keune, Cresco, IA and two special friends: Kevin and Allyssa Anderson.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers: John and Paul Zidlicky; one sister: Orpha Obermeier, one grandson, Matthew Oyloe and one nephew: Paul Zidlicky, Jr.
