John Wikan, age 82, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Wayne Hagen presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.

John Henry Wikan was born on September 6, 1928, the son of Halver Halverson Wikan and Amanda Louise (Meisner) Wikan in Elkader, IA. John attended country school near Elkader. He married Margaret “Peggy” Ruth Klotzbach on October 28, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Parsonage in Locust, IA, and to this union, eight children were born. John worked construction for Holland Brothers and Taylor Construction, both in Decorah, as well as farming near Decorah. In his younger days, he played guitar and sang in a band. John’s hobbies included fishing, playing cards, hunting and this CB radio. After retirement, his CB radio hobby grew into a business, which was known as “Johnnie’s Communications”, where he put radios into school buses in the tri-state area. John was a longtime member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

John is survived by his wife: Margaret “Peggy” Wikan, Waukon, IA. Two sons: Ron (Kathy) Wikan, MacGregor, IA and Ed (Lou Ann) Wikan, Waukon, IA. Three daughters: Mary Murphy, Decorah, IA; Pam (Dale) Jones, Waukon, IA; and Charlene Bender, Prairie Du Chien, WI. One daughter-in-law: Margie Wikan (Daryl) Moen, Decorah, IA; along with eighteen grandchildren: Rob (Jennifer) Wikan, Mendy (Derek) Cheseboro, Amy (Eric) Lensing, Tara (Dan) Stoddard, Gretchen (Chris) Lettau, Eric Wikan, Corissa Wikan, Amanda Wikan, Anna Marie Wikan, Chad Wikan, Cory Wikan, Colin (Jennifer) Wikan, Courtney Wikan, Robert Jones, Brian (Renee) Jones, David Bender, Megan Bender and Daniel Bender. Sixteen great grandchildren: Aspen & Rilee Wikan, Alan, Deacon & Drake Cheseboro, Alexa & Ashlyn Lensing, Aidan & Kyra Stoddard, Finn & Marit Lettau, Connley Wikan, Robert John Jones, Jr., Emma & Isabella Pugliese and Tyler Jones. One sister-in-law: Ardis Klotzbach, Decorah, IA, as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents: Halver Halverson Wikan and Amanda Louise (Meisner) Wikan. Three sons: Darrell in 1952, David in 1974 and William in 1997. Four brothers: Edwin, Robert, Harold and Lawrence Wikan. Four sisters: Marie (Mary) Hill, Victoria Stendel, Phylis Kuehl, and Helen Robinson. One son-in-law: Kim Murphy in 2008.
