Bernard Webb, age 84, of Decorah died Thursday, April 7, 2011, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011, at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Father Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 Sunday, April 10, 2011, and on Monday morning until 10:00 a.m., at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA.

Bernard Webb was born on June 19, 1926, the son of George and Josephine (Biesterveld) Webb in Eau Galle, WI. Bernard attended St. Henry’s Parochial School in Eau Galle, WI, and then Durand High School in Durand, WI. Bernard served in the US Navy from June 23, 1943 to March 3, 1946, serving on the USS Sperry in the Asiatic Pacific, off of the Island of Guam, during World War II. After the war, Bernard came to Decorah in 1946, with a construction company that built the barracks at Luther College for student housing. It was during this time, that he met Clara Ann Rogen and they were married on November 4, 1948, at St. Benedict’s rectory in Decorah. Bernard worked for Torvik Construction for several years before he started Webb Construction in the mid 1960’s. Bernard worked as a carpenter, mason, did concrete work and was a general contractor; building more than fifty new homes in the area and remodeled many more. He retired in 1996, at the age of seventy, but continued to maintain the St. Benedict Cemetery, as he did for the past thirty years. Bernard always enjoyed time spent with his family, but always enjoyed fishing and traveling on trips to Alaska, the Caribbean, Las Vegas and Haiti. Bernard was a member St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and life-long member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Bernard is survived by his wife of sixty-two years: Clara Ann Webb, Decorah, IA. Four children: Mike Webb (deceased), Linda (Robert) Haeussinger, Rochester, MN; Mark (Jane) Webb, Decorah, IA; and Lisa (Greg) Glisczinski, Neillsville, WI. One daughter-in-law: Cindy (Mark) Ballard, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Shawn (Ben) Martin, Bryan (Amanda) Webb, Katie (Chad) Refsland, Kris (John) Busch, T.J. (fiancé, Katie Gillaspey) Webb, Cody Webb, David Glisczinski, Patrick Glisczinski and Bradley Glisczinski. One step-granddaughter: Nikkole (Downing) Smart. Nine great grandchildren: Shaylan, Morgan, Mikenna & Maran Martin; Peyton Webb, Connor & Logan Refsland, Bladen, Logan & Jackson Smart. Four sisters: Marilyn (Al) LaBrec, De Pere, WI; Joan (John) Seipel, Eau Galle, WI; Nancy (Paul) Calloway, De Pere, WI; and Judy (Bud) Bland, Wyoming, MN. Three brothers: Lawrence (Mary) Webb, Eau Galle, WI; Bill (Virginia) Webb, Eau Galle, WI; and David (Julie) Webb, Eau Claire, WI. One brother-in-law: Jim Hayden, Durand, WI, along with many nieces and nephews.

Bernard was preceded in death by his son: Michael Webb on June 1, 2003. His parents: George and Josephine (Biesterveld) Webb. One brother: Gerald (Theresa) Webb. Three sisters: Cecila (Tom) Fedie, Marcella (Ken) Hurst, and Sally Hayden. One nephew: Cory Calloway. Bernard’s father and mother-in-law: Albert & Helga Rogen. His brother-in-law: Hank (Audrey) Rogen.
