Hulda J. Stofferahn, age 83, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at her home from a heart attack, while battling Parkinson’s Disease for eight years.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 26, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calmar Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Hulda Justina (Zick) Stofferahn was born on June 16, 1922 the daughter of Emil and Minna (Otto) Zick at Lucan, MN. She was baptized on Aug. 6, 1922 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on July 18, 1937 at the Lutheran Church, Johnsonville Township, Lucan, MN. Hulda attended country school at District #79 in Granite Rock Township where she graduated from the 8th grade. Hulda spent her earlier years working as a family assistant. She married Orval Stofferahn on December 30, 1946 in Lucan, MN. To this union, four children were born: Carolyn, Wayne, Brenda and Shirlene. They spent their early married life at Jackson, MN and Lake Park, IA. In 1967, they moved to Calmar, IA. She became a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church in 1968. Hulda was employed at the South Winn High School for fifteen years as the head cook. Hulda enjoyed singing, sewing, quilting, doing embroidery, gardening, playing cards and cooking for her family. Hulda was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church and the Calmar American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Hulda is survived by her husband, Orval Stofferahn, Calmar, IA. One son: Wayne Stofferahn, Des Moines, IA. Two daughters: Brenda Stofferahn, St. Paul, MN and Shirlene Stofferahn, Freeport, IL. Five grandchildren: August Stofferahn & wife Sarah, San Francisco, CA; Bryan Stofferahn, San Francisco, CA; Stephanie Bastyr & husband Gerald, Rogers, MN; “JR” Steven Crider, Plymouth, MN and Ashley Crider, Cedar Rapids, IA. Two great grandchildren: Tyler Bastyr and Luca Stofferahn. One sister: Hilda Grisham, Oregon City, OR and one brother: Hugo Zick & wife Gene, Lake Benton, MN. One sister-in-law: Amanda Zick, Redwood Falls, MN and many nieces and nephews.
Hulda was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter: Carolyn Crider in June 1989; two sisters: Louise in 1990 and Alma in 1936; and one brother: Otto in 2003.
