Lila McCormick, age 76, of Cresco, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa, from cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2008, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton, Iowa, with Rev. Richard Ament officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday morning. There will be a scripture service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Lila Mae (Hovden) McCormick was born on May 9, 1931, the daughter of Kenneth and Olga (Simonsen) Hovden in LincolnTownship, rural Ridgeway, Iowa. Lila graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1950, where she played girls basketball and was active in the glee and drama clubs. She married Gerald “Gene” McCormick on August 27, 1951 at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. Lila enjoyed playing cards, bowling, visiting, having coffee with her friends, and watching sports. She was a loyal fan of her children and grandchildren. In more recent years, Lila was the #1 fan of Lynn’s Crestwood basketball team. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and made the best chocolate chip cookies in Iowa. She had many wonderful friends and had kind words for everyone. Lila always lent a helping hand to anyone in need. Lila was so kind-hearted that sometimes she even cheered for the opponent. Throughout the years, Lila worked at Hovden’s Grocery Store, Koffee Kup, Carolan’s Corner Mart and the Cow Palace. She was an active member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton and enjoyed outings with her birthday club friends.

Lila’s family wishes to thank HoCA and Hospice of Howard County for the care and support she received during her illness.

Lila will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

Lila’s survivors include her husband: Gene McCormick, Cresco, IA. Seven children: Lynn (Jacque) McCormick, Cresco, IA, Teri (Rick) Hagen, Cedar Falls, IA, Jaci McCormick, St. Charles, MN, Jodi Donlan, Decorah, IA, Gena (Pete) McCaffrey Decorah, IA, Troy (Joan) McCormick, Mason City, IA and Kendra (Everett) Dunnick, stationed in South Korea. Eleven grandchildren: Tiffany (Tim) Dahlberg, DesiRea Donlan, Matt (Kacie) Denny, Brett Denny, Amber Hagen, Casey Corcoran, Kyle McCormick, Kelsey McCormick, Claudia, Isaac and Cormac Dunnick; two great grandchildren: Gage and Gatlin Dahlberg. Two sisters: Shirlee Neubauer (Jerry) Decorah, IA, and Rosemary Vopava, Ridgeway, IA. Two brothers: Virgil Hovden, Waucoma, IA and Roger (Carmen) Hovden, Ridgeway, IA.

Lila was preceded in death by her parents: Kenneth and Olga Hovden, and one sister: Janet Fisher.
