Florine Mary Klimesh was born on May 19, 1934, to Frank and Gertrude (Houdek) Herold. On May 4, 1953, Florine married Walter Klimesh at St. Clements Catholic Church, rural Spillville. They were the last couple to be married at St. Clements. To this union, six children were born: Sally, Sherry, Ken, Peggy, Jean and Paul. Walter and Florine farmed for 25 years on a farm located 5 miles north of Spillville. In 1978, they built a new home in Spillville. Florine, who always enjoyed painting, found she could do this for others, both interior and exterior. To her, this was great fun and not work. She was one of several people who helped restore the St. Wenceslaus Church alters when they were put back in place in 1983. Walter and Florine were departmental in getting St. Clements Church cleaned and back in church form starting in 1987. Florine also kept busy managing the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville for several summers. She worked at Hart’s Bakery in Decorah and Main Street Mini Mart, Spillville. She cooked lunches at CFS, Spillville Center for many years. She loved to fish whether it was in Canada, the mighty Mississippi, the Upper Iowa or just the Bohemian Creek for trout. She was never one to sit idle. She always had a big garden and enjoyed canning the fruits of her labor. While watching TV she was busy cross stitching quilt tops. More than 50 quilts are keeping family and friends warm. Florine was a life time member of St. Wenceslaus Parish, where she also attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School. She served on the parish council, held office for the St. Wenceslaus Ladies guild, and worked on mission projects. On August 23, 1997, Florine married Romuald Elsbernd at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville. Romuald and Florine spent many week-ends dancing at polka fests.
