Robert “Bob” Hitesman, age 82, of Calmar, Iowa died on Sunday, August 14, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calmar Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 16th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening by the Great Lights Masonic Temple #181. Friends may also call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning.

Robert Lou Hitesman was born on October 8, 1922 the son of Charles and Vivian (Wyant) Hitesman in Edgewood, Iowa. Bob attended and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1938. He lived with his aunt and uncle in Michigan for two years, before he was drafted into World War II. He served in the 85th Ordinance Battalion as a Medic from 1943-1946, entering Normandy Beach on D-Day. While in England, he met Marjorie Dolton and they were married on August 31, 1945 at the St. John’s Church of England in Plymouth, England. After the service they moved to Edgewood, IA, where he worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol for one year. They then moved to Calmar, where Bob operated his own gas station and then went to work for the Winn. Co. Sheriff’s Dept as a deputy. Bob then served as Winn. Co. Sheriff from 1956-1961 and was the Chief of Police in Decorah from 1962-1966. He also served as a Magistrate Judge for Winneshiek County for twenty-three years, retiring in 1994. Bob was also the Mayor of Calmar from 1970-1973. Bob was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church, Halverson-Giesen Am. Legion Post #266 and the Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977. Bob loved buying, selling and keeping his cars clean. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and keeping his house and yard meticulously neat. He also enjoyed boat rides on his “Daisy Mae” on the Mississippi River, drinking coffee and carpentry work. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.

Bob’s survivors include his wife, Marjorie Hitesman, Calmar, IA; two daughters: Sheryl (Ron) Juve and Lynn (Roger) Henningsgaard all of Decorah, IA and one son Bill Hitesman & friend Barb, Hastings, NE. Seven grandchildren: John (Dina) Juve, Mike (Sarah) Juve and Lars Juve; Jo Ann (Tom) Berns and Ryan Henningsgaard; Nicole and Heather Hitesman. Nine great grandchildren: Tyler Juve, Tommy Rivera; Lillian Juve; Dylon, Kaitlyn and Dustin Berns; Hope Henningsgaard; Aubrey and Kelsey Hitesman. One nephew: Tom (Lynne) Gladfelter, Schaumberg, IL; one great niece: Cheryl Gladfelter and one great nephew: Michael Gladfelter.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his half sister: Wilda Gladfelter.
