Andrew H. Hemesath, age 98, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Friday, October 31, 2008, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa, following a lingering illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Andrew Henry Hemesath was born on August 17, 1910, on the family farm, to Herman and Anna (Huber) Hemesath. Andrew attended St. Francis DeSales Catholic School and then worked on the family farm until he married Julia Lechtenberg at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa, on May 5, 1936. Together they farmed west of Ossian, until they bought a farm near Calmar and moved there in 1940. Andrew and “Jule” raised five children and farmed until 1975, when they retired and moved into Calmar. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Andrew was active in many community leadership positions: Winn. Co. Farm Bureau Director, South Winn. School Board, President of Eastern Iowa Breeders Assn, Winn. Co. Extension Council, Charter member of the South Winn Country Club, member of the Calmar Senior Citizen’s Club, Director and member of the Northeast Iowa Farm Service Co., Winn. Co. Soil Commissioner and a Director for the C & F Milk Plant.

Andrew’s survivors include his three daughters: Carol Hemesath, OSF, Dubuque, IA; Nancy Hemesath, Omaha, NE and Norma (Jim) Cahill, Minneapolis, MN. Two sons: Dan (Rosario) Hemesath, Clovis, CA and Phil (Carol) Hemesath, Decorah, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Molly (Aaron) Volker, Luke (Angela) Cahill & Michael Cahill, Paul (Audrey) Hemesath, Michelle (Justin) McDaniels, Peter (Sally) Hemesath, Timothy, Brian, Andrea and Matt Hemesath, and Sarah (Mike) Johnson. Eight great grandchildren: Christian & Lauren Johnson, Sam, Lucy & Kate Hemesath, Natalie Hemesath, Luke McDaniels and Erin Volker. One sister: Sister Luke Hemesath, S.Sp.S., Techny, IL. Two sisters-in-law: Odelia (Lenny) Cremer, Festina, IA and Rita (Linus) Bodensteiner, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Leo Elsbernd, Ossian, IA.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents: Herman and Anna (Huber) Hemesath. His wife: Julia Hemesath on May 19, 2003. One granddaughter: Laura Hemesath on May 21, 1985. Four sisters: Sister John Hemesath, S.Sp.S, Emma Hemesath, Pauline Schulte, and Helen Elsbernd. Three brothers: Victor (Virginia) Hemesath, Ted Hemesath and Herman (Helen) Hemesath. Four sisters-in-law: Catherine (Art) Huber, Edvina (Joe) Thuente, Bertha (John) Thuente, and Bridget Lechtenberg. Four brothers-in-law: Joe (Caroline) Lechtenberg, Greg (Elizabeth) Lechtenberg, Irenaeus Lechtenberg and Ted Lechtenberg.
