A luminous soul, she will be mourned by family and many friends. Irene was known for her sweet disposition, ready smile, soft caring voice and shining blue eyes. Blue was her favorite color. She was a proud Norweigan-American from the farms of Decorah. It’s there she developed the love of horses, dogs, hummingbirds and dancing. She attended Luther College followed by nursing school in Chicago, where she met her husband, Dr. William W. Hart from South Dakota. They were married Jan. 16, 1943. They forged a loving marriage, and lived throughout the world while Dr. Hart was a hospital commander in the United States Air Force. Upon Dr. Hart’s death in 1992, Irene stayed in San Antonio, Texas, but then moved to La Crosse to be near her family. She attended English Lutheran Church in La Crosse, enjoyed her friends and quilting group, walks with her dog, and visits with family. Irene will be dearly missed.
Irene is survived by her sons, Bill (Mary Rose), and Greg (Lidia), her daughter, Cindy (Steve): her grandchildren, Patricia, Margaret, Christopher, Tripp and Jenna; and her great-grandchildren, Sunny and Odin.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Ida Bakke; her twin sister, Phyllis Blair; and her brother, Andrew Bakke.
