Olga Halverson, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at her home following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik officiating. Burial will be in the Hauge Lutheran Cemetery, rural Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.

Olga Marion (Roed) Halverson was born on February 19, 1921, the daughter of Edward and Mathilda (Korson Johnson) Roed near Decorah, Iowa. Olga attended rural country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1939. She taught rural country school for one year. She married Orlando Halverson on September 24, 1940. Together they farmed near Frankville, Decorah, and Burr Oak; moving into Decorah in 1957. Olga worked at the Westside School in the lunch program until 1989 and then part-time at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in the kitchen. Olga enjoyed making quilts at the Decorah Lutheran Church and later volunteering at Aase Haugen making quilts. Olga especially loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved playing games, doing crafts and spending time with them. Olga enjoyed gardening and always had a “green thumb” with all her flowers. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Olga was an active member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, where she was a circle leader

Olga’s survivors include her husband, Orlando “Hap” Halverson, Decorah, IA. Two sons: David (Becky) Halverson, Decorah, IA and Herbert Halverson, Waterloo, IA. Four daughters: Marian Burris, Tulsa, OK; Helen (Bryan) Ice, Austin, TX; Yvonne (John) Serocki, San Diego, CA and Jeanette Stark, Davenport, IA. Four sisters-in-law: Margaret Stortz, Decorah, IA; Ruth Strub, Dubuque, IA; Edna Strub, Caledonia, MN and Dorothy Roed, Red Wing, MN. One brother-in-law: Donald (June) Halvorson, Decorah, IA. Fifteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.

Olga was preceded in death by her parents: Edward and Mathilda Roed. Two sisters: Harriett Ackerman and Hilma Roed in infancy. Four brothers: Knute, Bjarne, Edwin and Harry Roed.
