Lowell was born May 20, 1924 in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Carl and Ida (Josvanger) Selness. He attended school in Hesper and Mabel, Minnesota. He started farming the family farm at age fourteen and even after retiring he continued to help his sons run the farm until shortly before going into the nursing home in 2008. For many years he had a herd of purebred Herford cattle. On August 31, 1949 he married Elizabeth “Bette” Walhus in Spring Grove.
He was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed his family, woodworking, and fishing. He was proud to have been an honorary member of two Future Farmers of America chapters.

Lowell passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Tweeten – Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove, Minnesota at the age of 87.

Lowell is survived by his wife Bette of Spring Grove; two sons Scott (Becky), and Terry (Mary) both of Mabel; five grandchildren Kirby, Samantha, Travis, Jon, and Michael; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Dennis; a brother Norman; and two sisters Alice Anderson and Lois Williams.

Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 8 PM Sunday, April 22 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
