Arthur O. “Art” Erickson, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 18, 2006, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Carol Kress officiating. Burial will be in the Canoe Methodist Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa, with full military rites by the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz – Symonds American Legion Post #163, Hamre-Giesen DAV Chapter #8 and the AmVets Post #96.

Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Arthur Oscar Erickson was born on September 12, 1923, the son of Oscar and Marie (Sorenson) Erickson on the family farm near Springwater Hill, north of Decorah, Iowa. Art attended Canoe Twp. #8 Country School and attended Decorah High School. Art served in the US Navy from 1942-1945. Art married Evelyn Houdek on April 22, 1945 at the Methodist Parsonage in Decorah, Iowa. After Art was discharged in 1945, they returned to Decorah and operated The Barbecue and worked for Wagner Chevrolet. Art then owned and operated Erickson’s Texaco and Erickson’s Sport Center, until he retired in the mid 1980’s. Art was instrumental in helping to start and officiate at the Decorah Race Track and he enjoyed watching NASCAR races. Art enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and hunting. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Decorah, the Cooties, the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977, where he served as commander.

Art’s survivors include his son: Alan (Karen) Erickson, Decorah, IA and daughter: Jan (Jim) Frederick, Sac City, IA. Eight grandchildren: Lory (Mike) Penniman, Mike (Sara) Frederick, Kevin (Stephanie) Frederick, Scott and Mindy Frederick; Chad Erickson, Jeremy (fiancé, Amanda Brandt) Erickson and Kirsten Erickson; Twelve great grandchildren: Kyle & Trista Erickson; Amber Bock; Bradley Corrigan; Abbigal and Boden Penniman; Lane and Erin Frederick; Kerstyn, Rachel, Brian and Caleb Frederick. One sister: Leona Roher, Decorah, IA and one brother: Harold Erickson, Mabel, MN and many nieces and nephews.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Erickson on April 8, 2002; one great grandson: David Alan Erickson on March 28, 2005; three brothers: Chet Erickson, Merlin Erickson and Wallace Erickson; two sisters: Edith Hjelmeland and Vivian Barth.
