Roger Bjergum, age 66, of Decorah, Iowa died on Sunday, October 2, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a sudden illness.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please remember the hurricane victims or the charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Kim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah with a VFW service at 7:00 p.m. There will be visitation after 12:00 at the church on Thursday morning.

Roger Allan Bjergum was born on February 17, 1939 in Spring Grove, Minnesota the son of Arthur and Bernice (Johnson) Bjergum. He was baptized and confirmed at the Faith Lutheran Church of Black Hammer, Minnesota. Roger attended and graduated from Spring Grove High School, during high school he worked on Kenneth Bratland and Alden Solum’s dairy farms. He worked on James Evenson’s turkey farm. He served in the US Army from 1961-63, serving in Germany. On May 8, 1965, he married LaVonne Moen at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Roger continued to work for James Evenson and then for Leonard Stoskopf, north of Henrytown, MN. In 1970, they moved to Decorah, where he farmed the Erlin Lomen farm. Roger worked for Holland Brothers Construction and then at DECO Products from 1993 until his death. Roger enjoyed collecting and working on old tractors, golfing and he especially loved being with his family and grandchildren. Roger was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and the Helof – Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Roger’s survivors include his wife, LaVonne Bjergum, Decorah, IA. His mother: Bernice Bjergum, Spring Grove, MN. One son: Lloyd (Irene) Bjergum, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Jeanne (Bob) Mulder, Berthoud, CO and Alice Bjergum & friend Mike Weis, Decorah, IA. Six grandchildren: Greg, Jessica, Jacob & Samantha Mulder and Katie & Lacie Bjergum. One sister: Judy (Sterling) Distad, Stewartville, MN. His father and mother-in-law: Leo and Thelma Moen, Decorah, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Duane (Ann) Moen and Lyle (Nancy) Moen, Washington, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Bjergum in 1982.
