Clarence Ameling, age 87, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Clarence Joseph Ameling was born August 9, 1920 the son of John and Mathilda (Kruse) Ameling, near St. Lucas, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa and received his education at St. Lukes Catholic School. At a young age, Clarence went to live with his Uncle William Kruse and Aunt Rose Kruse to help care for his aging Grandmother. He came to know and love Uncle Bill and Aunt Rose as his second parents and continued to live with them until his marriage to Ida M. Smith. They were married on April 21, 1947, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, and to this union nine children were born.

Clarence and Ida farmed Southeast of Fort Atkinson until 1964. They continued to live on the farm and Clarence worked road construction for Herb Rausch Excavating, Myer Bros, and Reilly Construction until his retirement in 1982.

Clarence’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan, and often planned his day around the baseball schedule. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and daily trips to Fort Atkinson for coffee with friends. His favorite pastimes were caring for their large yard and garden, growing tomatoes, bird watching and woodworking. He was especially known for his creative bird houses. He also was an avid Packer and Cub fan.

Clarence is survived by his wife: Ida Ameling, Fort Atkinson, IA. His children: Judy Hertges, Ossian, IA; John Ameling, Galena, IL; Janet (Roger) Koenig, Ossian, IA; Jerry (Joan) Ameling, Ossian, IA; Joan (Gary) Johnson, Cedar Rapids, IA; Joyce (Rod) Hicks, Soddy Daisy, TN; Jackie (Randy) Kuennen, Fort Atkinson, IA; Joe Ameling, South Dakota; and Julie (Steve) Gibson, Ossian, IA. Fourteen grandchildren: Ron Hertges, Brad (Karen) Hertges, Christian Ameling, Justin (Kim) Koening, Jill (Chris) Pasbrig, Brandy Reece, Brooke (Justin) Ruley, Dustin Hicks, Jason Kruger, Ashley, Brittany & Courtney Kuennen, Brittany & Sadie Gibson. Ten great grandchildren: Derek, Tyler, Alex and Alyssa Hertges, Rebecca & Jackson Hertges, Lauren Pasbrig, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Pasbrig, Docker Reece and Austin Kruger. Two brothers: Felix (Collette) Ameling, West Union, IA and Irvin (Alma) Ameling, St. Lucas, IA. Three sisters: Marcella Wurzer, Lawler, IA; Arlene Huinker, Calmar, IA and Bernice (Pat) Einck, Cedar Falls, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Bernice Ameling, Waucoma, IA; Margaret (Francis) Wurzer, St. Lucas, IA and Lavonne Dority, Mason City, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Cletus Mihm, St. Lucas, IA and Alvin (Doris) Smith, Ft. Atkinson, IA and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents John & Mathilda (Kruse) Ameling, Uncle William Kruse and Aunt Rose Kruse, 3 brothers; Joe, Richard & Alfred Ameling and one sister; Viola Mihm; Son-in-law Dick Hertges, 2004. Grandchildren: Troy Hertges 1995 and Madison Ameling-Gibson 2006. Four sisters-in-law: Collette Ameling, Addie Ameling, Elaine Ameling and Bertha (Smith) Dority. Three brothers-in-law: Tony Wurzer, Robert Huinker and Bud Dority.

Words can not express how deeply Clarence will be missed by family and friends for his kind and gentle heart, ready smile, helping hand and incredible sense of humor. May he rest in happiness and peace with the Lord.
