Gertrude Meyer, age 91, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center in New Hampton, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2007, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Gertrude Mary (Rausch) Meyer was born on December 22, 1915, the daughter of Julius and Mary (Neuzil) Rausch in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Gertie attended St. John’s Catholic School and graduated from Ft. Atkinson High School in 1934. She worked at home and married Denis Meyer on August 14, 1945 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson, Iowa. Gertie was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked at St. John’s Catholic School as a custodian. Gertie’s greatest joy was being the Fort Atkinson newspaper correspondent for the Decorah, New Hampton, West Union, Calmar and the Ossian Newspapers, for over thirty years. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, flower gardening and baking. She was very avid baker, baking for the Rendezvous Days every year. Gertie also enjoyed taking her lady friends to their appointments. Gertie was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, Catholic Foresters and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also was the Senior Citizen Dinner Coordinator for Fort Atkinson for several years.

Gertrude’s survivors include her two daughters: Mary Lee (Don) Moothart, Fairfield, IA and Denise (Ken) Kuehner, Mankato, MN. Two sons: Jim (Kathy) Meyer, Plano, TX and David (Kim) Meyer, Cedar Rapids, IA. Eight grandchildren: Kevin (Wendy) Einck, Ric (Judy) Einck, Nicole (Joe) Gugin, Matthew (Andrea) Meyer, Mark Meyer, Kyle Kuehner, Graham Kuehner and Nicholas Meyer. Eight great grandchildren: Lacey & Kylie Einck, Sam & Brady Stier, Grace & Leo Einck, Donavin & Jameson Gugin. One brother: Art (Mary Grace) Rausch, Fort Atkinson, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Hildegard Schissel, Ossian, IA; Lois Rausch, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Clara Meyer, Madison, WI; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Gert was preceded in death by her parents: Julius and Mary Rausch. Her husband: Denis on January 27, 1977. Two brothers: Carl and Raymond Rausch.
