Dorothy Kuennen, age 89, of St. Lucas, IA, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA, with Father Nick March presiding. Burial will be in the St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas, IA.

Friends may call on Monday, March 7, 2011, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the St. Luke’s Historical Chapel in St. Lucas, IA and on Tuesday morning after 9:30 a.m., at the church. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Monday at the Historical Chapel. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Winneshiek County Hospice and the St. Luke's Historical Society.

Dorothy Theresa (Mihm) was born on July 6, 1921, the daughter of Louis and Theresa (Bruess) Mihm on her family’s farm located across the road from St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA. She attended St. Luke’s Catholic School. On August 27, 1940, she married Joe A. Kuennen at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. They farmed together for 45 years. Dorothy also worked as a cook at St. John- St. Luke Catholic School for eight years after retiring from the farm. In 1985, Joe and Dorothy moved to St. Lucas. Joe died on October 30, 1996. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, bingo, and attending social events in the area. Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, embroidering, scrapbooking, writing, and conversing with friends and family. Dorothy was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, St. Lucas Senior Citizens, and the American Legion Auxiliary. In March 2010, Dorothy entered the Eastern Star Home in Decorah, where she appreciated the good care and friendships she made there. She also enjoyed the visits of family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by her five sons: Gerald “Gerry” (Debby) Kuennen, Southlake, TX; Duane (Cathy) Kuennen, Dubuque, IA; Adrian (Marilyn) Kuennen, Ft. Atkinson, IA; John (Annette) Kuennen, Ft. Atkinson, IA; and Joe J. Kuennen, Ames, IA. Thirteen grandchildren: Kim (Ron) Macklin, Scott (Stephanie) Kuennen, Mike (Karyn) Kuennen, Rob Kuennen, Christy (James) Willis, Andy (Mindy) Kuennen, Nick (Laura) Kuennen, Maria Kuennen, Denny (fiancée, Melissa Little) Kuennen, Deanna (Ken) Dlhy, Ben (Kelly) Kuennen, Jesse (Cheryl) Kuennen, and Todd Kuennen. Also surviving are nineteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, along with two sisters: Marcella Schmitt, Lawler, IA and Margaret Smith, St. Lucas, IA. One sister-in-law: Frieda Mihm, West Union, IA.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Theresa (Bruess) Mihm. Her husband: Joe on October 30, 1996. Two brothers: Linus and Cletus (Viola) Mihm. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Willie & Vera Kuennen, Clem & Marie Kuennen, John & Margaret Ott, Roman & Ann Kuennen, James Schmitt and Milton Smith
