Leonard Hertges, age 92, of Decorah, IA died Saturday March 19, 2011 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, IA, with Father Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 10:30 a.m., at the funeral home Wednesday morning.

Leonard Clement Hertges was born on the family farm five miles north of Ossian, IA, the son of Michael and Anna (Zweibahmer) Hertges. He attended country school and DeSales Catholic School. On August 17, 1942, Leonard married Viola Wepler at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. To this union four children were born, Ann Marie, Richard, Cheryl and James. Leonard worked in Cedar Rapids for several years and Wepler Meat Plant in Decorah. In 1952, they moved to a farm south of Calmar where they farmed until 1966 when they moved to a farm south of Decorah until retirement in 1980. They made their home in Haugen Hummell after retirement and Leonard moved to Aase Haugen in December of 2010. Leonard was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Leonard loved farming, the outdoors, was an avid reader but especially cherished time spent with family. Everyone enjoyed his story-telling as he had an outstanding memory.

Leonard is survived by his daughter: Cheryl (James) Elshoff of Florence, Al, son: James of Spillville, and daughter-in-law: Judy Hertges of Ossian. Grandchildren: Angela (Donnie) Ellis, Castalia, Jenny (Duan) Funk, Winthrop, Julie (Andy) Plozel, Monona, Kristie (Dean) Baumler, Ossian, Amanda Schmitt, Des Moines, Ron (Marsha) Hertges, Festina, Brad (Karen) Hertges, Ossian, Ben Elshoff, Florence, AL and Grandson-in-law, Lenny Imoehl, Ossian, and nineteen great grandchildren. Two sisters: Gladys Wolfe, Decorah and Dorothy (Rusty) Barnes of Cresco, sister-in-laws: Velma Hertges, Waterloo, Teresa Hertges, Ossian. Sisters-in-law: Luella Dale, Decorah, Gladys Wepler, Decorah and Pat Wepler of Waterloo, along with many nieces and nephews.

Leonard was proceeded in death by his parents: Mike and Anna Hertges, wife: Viola in 2007, daughter: Ann Marie Schmitt, March 19, 2004 and son: Richard Hertges December, 3 2004. Grandchildren: Joseph Schmitt, Matthew Elshoff, Troy Hertges, and Gina (Schmitt) Imoehl. Brothers: Ralph, Donald, Nicholas, Gregory and Clarence. Sisters: Marcelite Bucheit, Mayme Klee, Hildegard Sundre and Florence Hawkins.

The family gratefully acknowledges the support and care during his brief time at the Aase Haugen Home of Decorah.
