Arlene Brockman

Arlene Brockman, 77, Ossian, Iowa, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at her home. Arlene was born to Clem and Florence Lusson Bodensteiner on April 25, 1934 in Fayette Co., Iowa. She received her education by attending St. Luke's Grade and High School in St. Lucas, Iowa. After high school graduation, Arlene attended Airline School in Minneapolis, MN for three months, than accepted a job with Piedmont Airlines in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she was employed for about three years in Airline Communications.

On June 5, 1956, Arlene was united in marriage to Bradley Brockman of Ossian, IA. To this union four children were born; Barry, Byron, Belle and Brenda. Arlene also has one granddaughter, Bobbi-Jo Guenther Molokken of Balltown, IA, and one grandson, Levi Guenther of West Union, IA. As the family grew up they all helped work at Brockman's Grocery and helped get their trademark business up and running, "The best little Wurst House this side of Texas."

Arlene loved Ossian and would do anything in her power to promote Ossian. Working through the Ossian Community Crown Club, she initiated many projects like the house numbering system, the painted mural, the big "Welcome Rocks" on each end of town with the addition of the barn quilts now. She also spearheaded the "Our Town" Christmas series of tree decorations.

Arlene was an avid golfer. She was born with a natural musical talent from God and inherited from her parents. She never had a music lesson in her life. She shared her talent at many a family get together and sing-a-long, entertaining at nursing homes, and playing organ and piano at church. With the help of Deb and the St. Francis Adult Choir we had our own version of the popular Polka Mass! Arlene helped get the "Community Singers" of the Ossian area organized and they sang together for approximately twenty years. She then joined the Northern Lights of Decorah, IA, a four part ladies singing group she was a part of for many years. She also loved singing alto in the St. Francis Adult Choir since it began, and being a member of the local "Country Cousins" theatre group. Her many talents will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Brad; one son, Byron of Ossian; two daughters, Belle (Roy) Guenther of West Union and Brenda (Jesse) Mendez of St. Charles, MO; two grandchildren, Bobbi-Jo (Dan) Molokken of Balltown and Levi Guenther of West Union; five brothers, Edward (Bernie deceased) Bodensteiner, Clem (Leona) Bodensteiner, John (Carolyn) Bodensteiner, Ivan (Pat) Bodensteiner, James (Roberta) Bodensteiner; two sisters, Virginia (Jim deceased) Schmelzer, Dolly (Mel deceased) Kuennen and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Florence Bodensteiner, and her son, Barry Brockman of Ossian.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, from 3-7 p.m. at the Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa, with a scripture service at 3 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Saturday at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa, from 8:30 a.m. until mass time.
