Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Dickie Neil Hughes, age 68, of Frankville, Iowa were held Tuesday, January 27 at 10 a.m. at the Frankville Presbyterian Church in Frankville with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery with arrangements by Schutte Funeral Service of Postville, Iowa. Casket bearers were David Hughes, Jr., James Hughes, Dan Olson, Alex Krambeer, Tony Krambeer, and Curtis Krambeer. Honorary bearers were Raymond Watson, Curtis Krambeer, and his grandchildren.
Dickie Neil Hughes, son of Oran and Venita Jerrine (Allen) Hughes, was born March 11, 1929 in Frankville, Iowa. He attended Frankville Stone School and graduated from the Postville High School in 1947. He attended Northeast Iowa Community College, Calmar, Iowa where he received a coaching certificate. On July 17, 1947 he married Dolores Krambeer at the Presbyterian parsonage in Waukon, Iowa. Dickie went into the well drilling business with his father and grandfather, moved houses, and ran a sawmill. He worked for Gene's Electric and the electric Motor shop in Postville, Iowa. He helped set up shops in Elkader, Iowa, and Manchester, Iowa, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
In later years Dickie coached wrestling for Waukon, Monona, and Postville youths. He was involved in local softball tournaments, serving as umpire at times, taught hunting safety, was involved in the boy Scouts, and 4-H programs. He was a member of the Frankville Fire Department for over 25 years. He was a member of the Frankville Presbyterian Community Church. Following a stroke, he lived at home for five years. In August 1994 he became a resident of the Northgate Care Center in Waukon, Iowa.
Dickie Neil Hughes died Friday, January 23, 1998 in Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Marsha Hughes.
Dickie is survived by his wife Dolores; 5 sons, Barry Hughes of Postville, Iowa, Mark (Doreen) Hughes of Lawrence, Kansas, Clifford (Joan) Hughes of Frankville, Iowa, Ted (Susan) Hughes of Postville, Iowa, and Jeffrey (Melba) Hughes of Burlington, Texas; 2 daughters, Jerrine Hughes and Colleen Kamp, both of Frankville, Iowa; 27 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren; and a brother David Lee (Barbara) Hughes of Frankville, Iowa.
