Crystal M. Nierling, age 64, of Mabel, Minnesota died Saturday, October 5, 1985 at Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Mabel, Minnesota with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating at the services were Rev. Daniel Knipper and Rev. Eugene Kutsch with Steine Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were John Gallagher, Gary McCabe, Charles Waters, Gary Decker, Martin Snell, and Gerald Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Macha, Forrest Little, Bryon Hanlon, Erling Naeseth, Sophus Van Horn and William Van Horn.

Crystal was born February 20, 1921 in Burchinal, Iowa (Cerro Gordo County), the daughter of Benjamin and Lynville (Buffington) Van Horn. She attended rural schools in Allamakee County schools. She married Earl Francis Nierling on November 23, 1937 at Lycurgus Catholic Church in Allamakee County, Iowa. Mrs. Nierling was a custodian at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for nine years. She was a member of the Catholic Church and was active in the Rosary Society and church circles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, seven brothers, one sister, and one daughter in infancy.

Survivors include seven children: Dale Nierling of Decorah, Iowa, Dean Nierling of Burr Oak, Iowa, Randy Nierling of Lansing, Iowa, Gary Nierling of Woodward, Iowa, Darlene Kimber of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joan Underbakke of Burr Oak, Iowa, and Marsha Kruse of Decorah, Iowa; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Sophus Van Horn of Florida and William Van Horn of Waukon, Iowa; and 5 sisters, Margurett O'Brien of Fowlerville, Michigan, Charlotte Freehling of Detroit, Michigan, Laura Fenton of Houghton, Michigan, Cora Gray of Reno, Nevada, and Lynville Gerlach of Detroit, Michigan.
